How coincidences and some courage can determine a professional career
Cor Koning, RUG
Cor Koning studied general and polymer chemistry at the University of Groningen from 1976-1983 and subsequently performed a PhD study in polymer chemistry at the same university. After successfully defending his PhD thesis he started an industrial career in 1987 at DSM Research in Geleen. In 2000 he left DSM and became full professor in polymer chemistry at the Eindhoven University of Technology, but in 2011 he returned to industry. He joined DSM Resins and Functional Materials (DSM RFM) in Zwolle and after some years had passed he was approached by Prof. Francesco Picchioni to join the ENTEG group at the University of Groningen on a part-time basis. From 2018 on, Cor Koning combined an industrial career with an academic position.
In 2021 DSM RFM was acquired by Covestro, formerly Bayer Materials Science. Cor Koning is currently Covestro Science Fellow, still located in Zwolle and focusing his R&D activities on the development of sustainable materials for coatings and adhesives applications.
During the talk Cor Koning will illustrate how coincidences and other circumstances can influence decisions to change from an academic research environment to an industrial workplace and vice versa. Scientific highlights and successful product developments achieved during the several stages of his career will be shown.
